From 1974 to 2007, James's Street
Steel
operated from the company premises at 34 James's Street, Dublin 8.
In the beginning the process of cutting and bending reinforcement was
done outdoors in an open yard on basic machinery. In the early 1980's a
factory was constructed and an Arnold shearline was added for cutting
the reinforcement. Later in the 1980's a MEP automatic link bender was
purchased and it was followed shortly after by an EVG automatic link
bender.
As the company moved into the 1990's it continued to update
machinery as new ideas and new machinery developed for the reinforcement
industry. A second EVG was added in 1993 and in 1994 the old Arnold
shearline was updated to an RMS Shearline, the first of its kind in the
country. Also during 1994 the method used for cutting reinforcing bars
changed. Up until then the cutting sequences were decided in the factory
by the shearline operator. However with the advancement of computer
software new systems for cutting reinforcement were beginning to appear
worldwide. James's Street Steel embraced the new computer age and
purchased an American Optimisation programme and became the first
company in Ireland to cut reinforcement on an optimised shearline. The
cutting sequences were produced in the company office and transferred to
machine by data box and the results were instant. Productivity soared
and the company never looked back.
In the year 2003 the company expanded
again and added a second RMS shearline, a Stema-Pedax automatic link
bender and a Stema Pedax double bender to nearly double the capacity of
the James's Street factory. However we had built into every available
corner and the lack of space was becoming a problem.
In 2005 a decision
was taken to seek a site to build a new factory and after a few months
of searching a suitable site was found in Greenogue Business Park, Rathcoole, Co. Dublin and the company moved
into it's new home in December 2007.
